- Orthodontic associate
Description
We are Haas Orthodontic Arts, based in Stow, Ohio. We have been in continuous operation since 1957. In the coming years the two remaining brothers will be retiring and it falls to me as the business administrator to find a strong fit to become our newest associate that will come on as a new full-time orthodontist and in the progression of time move into the role of owner/president of the organization.
My challenge will be to meet all potential candidates and learn about them and to be a source of information about our organization with the intent of finding that one great fit.
Generally, there are three traditional pathways for a student after graduation:
Work for a corporate entity. This comes with the appeal of going to work, getting paid and not requiring any financial ties to the organization. However, doctors working for large corporations typically have no hand in the decision-making processes or any control in how the business is run. Additionally, there is typically not as strong an incentive or financial reward for superior skill sets or time invested.
They can choose to open a practice from scratch with your name on the sign on the building. This comes with a lot of upfront tasks including sourcing locations, acquiring staff and all the infrastructure to both treat patients and run a business. Most importantly, they will be at a zero-starting point on their book of business and will have to draw in enough new patients to pay their staff and themselves. The upfront costs in time, energy and money on this are substantial.
They could try to buy a practice from doctors looking to retire right now. That will typically run you at least $500,000 right now and scaling up to 4-5 million depending on where the practice is located and if they have any underlying debt obligations or own their own facilities. My own experience in the industry has put the number higher than that for the last few practices sold in Northeast Ohio.
So, I want to simply open with a value proposition that is straight forward and extremely strong. I will outline where we are from an operational standpoint.
We were established in 1957 with huge name recognition in the surrounding area.
The two most prevalent expanders in orthodontics are the Haas expander and Hyrax expander. The Haas expander was developed by Dr. Andrew Haas, the namesake that opened our practice and to this day his sons still own and operate. That is the legacy you will be joining.
Extremely healthy company.
o We own our own buildings.
o We have zero operational debt.
o 2025 will be our strongest fiscal year in a decade.
o Strong residual patient base that has required no marketing within a decade to keep all our offices busy.
o Modern infrastructure including x-ray machines, computers, servers and phone systems.
o Complete intact staffing with experience levels up to 20 years with the company.
o Streamlined business operations where everything is handled and ready to go for a doctor to come be a doctor and not have to worry about payroll, lawn care or taxes.
We are looking for someone that understands that this is indeed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We are looking for one person that can bring all their education and skillsets to the table and be willing to learn the methods and traditions that we have spent decades honing. You will have both the benefits of competitive pay from the beginning and an established framework to move towards a position of ownership of this company as the two brothers reach their determined retirement dates.
This is a very special process for us and an outstanding opportunity for one individual. We are hand selecting one person that will invest themselves in this organization, to embrace our legacy, make it their own and carry it forward.
